About Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the science that studies the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It informs policy decisions and evidence-based practices by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare.

The NITHA Epidemiologist supports health coordination including immunization, communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases monitors for the partnership and technical advice and expertise for policy making for First Nations.

Program Goals & Objectives

The Epidemiologist provides leadership, direction and vision in clinical research and education. This is accomplished primarily through the Public Health Working Group.

The Epidemiologist’s roles are to:

  • Provide the data and analyzed results to the MHO
  • Provide demographic information on NITHA
  • Improve the capacity to manage communicable and non-communicable diseases
  • Support promotion of CD and STD awareness in NITHA communities
  • Report on Influenza-like illnesses and immunization coverage
  • Provide Partnership with Statistical Health Information on a regular and ongoing basis
  • assist with development of health policies and protocols
  • Consult with physicians, educators, researchers and other staff regarding disease trend, data usage and support intervention advice
