About Infection Prevention & Control

Infection Prevention and Control is an important component of health care that refers to policies, practices, and procedures that help to prevent or minimize the risk of spreading infections in health care settings. Infection prevention and control measures protect clients (residents/ patients), employees and visitors from acquiring Healthcare -Associated Infections (HAI).

Certain criteria must be met in order for an infectious disease to be spread from person to person. This process, called the chain of infection, can only occur when all six links in the chain are intact. Infection Control principles are aimed at breaking one or more links in this chain.

Program Goals & Objectives

The Infection, Prevention and Control Advisor provides leadership, direction and vision in administration, clinical practice, education, and research.

The Advisor’s roles are to:

  • Lead with development of policies and procedures in infection control
  • Educate health care workers and community members
  • Evaluate products and procedures in various infection control practices such as hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, equipment disinfection and sterilization.
  • Improve standards of practice through research, literature review, and data analysis
  • Work with the NITHA partners to provide infection prevention and control (IPC) support to the health centres and the communities

An online Infection Prevention & Control Training Course has been developed for First Nations healthcare workers in partnership with Saint Elizabeth.
